Mental Health Support Groups

The Mental Health Support Groups offered at Calgary Association of Self Help, provide a supportive atmosphere where individuals can come together to share their concerns and their successes.  The mission of the groups is to enable people in attendance to gain support from their peers, to build meaningful and healthy relationships with others,  to learn effective problem solving skills, build confidence and self esteem and to end the isolation that can result from mental illness.

The Mental Health Support Groups provide participants with:

  • discussion and topics that are meaningful to individuals in attendance
  • peer support and mutual aid
  • opportunities to build healthy relationships with peers
  • resources identification

The groups provide an opportunity for participants to share whatever they feel without expectations or judgments; where participants can feel listened to and supported.  The members of the groups are invited to discuss concerns or share whatever they would like within the group; the topics are determined by the members involved.  Members help each other to identify problems and strengths, give support and share ways of coping.

A staff facilitator is present to guide the process and to provide support, encouragement and resources when needed.
